Close to nature

Deppisch Architects came up with a design for the hotel that supports this philosophy, bringing nature into the hotel rooms. The building is situated adjacent to an apple orchard. The extensive glazing allows clear views into the orchard so guests can enjoy the changing daylight situation and the change of colours through the seasons. To ensure privacy the tall clear glass doors are bordered on both sides by panels of insulating glass with an integrated layer of translucent capillaries. The contrast of clear and ‘frosted’ glass generates a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Shadows of the branches of the apple trees create fascinating, ever-changing patterns on the walls of the hotel rooms. Thanks to the functional glazing the daylight in the interiors is diffuse and evenly spread. Besides promoting this idyllic atmosphere, the building also scores top points for sustainability. The elongated, two-storey structure is heated exclusively using local energy sources, reducing its carbon footprint to practically zero. Photovoltaic modules mounted on the roof generate all the electricity required. The building materials applied are equally environment-friendly. The hotel received 2011 European Architecture Award for Energy and Architecture – a further award to add to the many it has gained since it was completed in 2006.
