Modern aesthetic meets Asiatic tradition

06.02.2012 Article

The internal dining space covers 230 square metres, with 150 square metres for external dining in the hotel courtyard. The design team researched their brief from The Met Hotel in depth, with trips to Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia to seek out the essence of distinctly modern Asian cuisine. “I wanted to create a truly sumptuous atmosphere without the stereotypical visual references. We looked at the contrast which exists between traditional and contemporary Asian culture and the duality which exists between the two, and have tried to integrate that sense into our design,” Andy Martin explains.
The restaurant’s interior is conceived as a dynamic masculine space, with its furniture tactile and feminine. The seating is arranged in a central sculptural element, the key colour charcoal grey. Intricately crafted and luxurious semi-private seating makes the Chan restaurant cosy and intimate. The space incorporates a dramatic sense of layering with graphically lit wall panels, open grid ceilings, and engraved detailing on the tables. Tattooed graphics on upholstery and 21st century ‘manga’ interpretations in the cocktail lounge make for a dining experience that cleverly combines Asian street culture and cosmopolitan sophistication – definitely a very special dining experience.
